Tax Preparation

Don Guthrie CPA, CFP, MBADon’t Pay More Taxes Than You Owe!

With Donald B. Guthrie, you get more than a tax return.

Your tax professional should do more than just prepare your tax return. Your tax professional should analyze that return to save you money. Unlike some firms that just “crunch the numbers,” I recommend ways to reduce your tax liabilities and improve your overall financial; picture in light of your personal goals and objectives. Frequently, my recommendations more than offset the cost of professional fees.

My integrated approach covers more than just income taxes.  As both a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Financial Planner, I can provide technical expertise in the following:

  • Preparation of federal and out-of-state tax returns. I can advise you concerning record keeping requirements, identify deductible job hunting and moving expenses, compute the gain or loss on the sale of your home, and determine your tax basis in a new home. Along with your return you will receive savings and planning ideas that could be worth thousands of dollars to you.
  • Free Electronic Filing For my client’s convenience, my firm provides free electronic filing of your federal individual tax return where it is appropriate. (Of course, not all returns are eligible or a good candidate for this process.)
  • Review pension benefits at both your old job and your new one. If you are entitled to money from you old company’s pension plan, I can advise you on the tax consequences of the various options relating to the funds.
  • I am also available to review your entire financial situation, including estate plan and investment portfolio.

Moved Or Bought a Home Recently?

From a financial view point, three of the most important events in your life are work-related moves, change of employer and the sale/purchase of a personal residence. If you have had any or all three of these in the past year, there will be major financial consequences. I counsel first time homeowners how their new purchase affects their tax return and the additional required recordkeeping. For the rest, I can answer those difficult questions that inevitably arise out of a move or change in residence. Have you considered:

  • How a move from a common law property state to Texas, a community property state, will impact your finances and estate planning?
  • How to properly treat the gain or loss on the sale of your home?
  • How to properly deduct moving and/or job hunting expenses?
  • What to do about the cash distribution from your old company’s pension plan, and what are the tax consequences?
